Top 10 Spiritual U2 Songs

Maybe I’m just biased. But U2 can probably be quite safely described as one of the few mainstream bands that have managed to evoke at times intense spiritual sentiments in their songs whilst never coming across as preachy or zealous. Although much of the imagery in their work has been drawn from Jewish and Christian texts, they have rarely appealed to a sectarian mindset, evoking a view of the divine that has struck a chord with people of many different faiths and religious traditions.

Having followed U2 since 1983, I dig this topic. In 1988, I became a Christian, right in the middle of the Joshua Tree Tour (I saw two shows). Even before my commitment to Christ, I was drawn to U2′s spirituality. However, I would strike “Wake Up Dead Man” and “Playboy Mansion” from the list — those songs are from the disappointing Pop album — and add others, especially from October, U2′s second album.

October is an openly Christian album, featuring soaring anthems. I would have added three songs from October: “With a Shout,” a powerful anthem about the cross, and “Rejoice,” a song that contains one of my favorite lyrics (“I can’t change the world, but I can change the world in me, if I rejoice!”), and “Gloria,” which inexplicaply misses the list. The song “Celebration,” from about the same period, is another classic religious anthem, containing another favorite lyric of mine: “I believe in the atomic bomb.”
