Freedom in Christ

ihsThe righteousness of God is not a burden, but a gift. When I feel oppressed or defeated spiritually, it is not that God’s yoke of righteousness is too demanding, but that I am trying to satisfy two masters. I am trying to live between two worlds: one of self-will and desire, the other of holiness. The burden, the oppression, is in serving two masters. “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). You cannot have both. But when I embrace the free gift, salvation in Christ, there is liberty. Hope is restored. I find the way of God is easy, his way light. I find myself able to do the things the Lord sets before me in Christ. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2). I do not say, then, that the way of God is impossible, for he has made it possible. I do not say either that the righteousness of God is unattainable, for he has put it within my reach. He has set me free. If I am burdened, I confess my sin: “God, I have put the world before you; I am not serving you, and you alone.” And when I am freed, I say, “God, you have put eternity before me; I can do all things in Christ Jesus who strengthens me.”
